It’s 2020. It’s been a rough year — for our finances, emotions, and health. During this time of uncertainty and unprecedented challenge, are you taking advantage of the time and money-saving products offered exclusively to active American Simmental Association members?
We see you. Day-in and day-out, you are working tirelessly to keep the cattle industry going strong. To make your job a little easier, ASA offers tools that will keep you informed on your breeding selection and herd information.
If you’re not using the online Herdbook Services, you aren’t taking advantage of your full membership benefits.
Here are a few of my favorite tools:
EPD Search (Found under the Data Search tab)
The EPD Search provides you a way to do an extended animal search based on your individual criteria such as EPDs, Indexes, breed type, color, and so much more.
This tool is great if you’re searching for a top AI sire, donor dam, or herd bull for your next breeding season. The search allows you to adjust the Index or EPD by percentage ranking or by specific numbers and helps you trim down your breeding search results with a couple of clicks of a button.
Planned Mating (Found under the Herd Mgmt tab)
Planned Mating gives breeders an estimate of genetics on their calves from comparing a specific mating. The tool estimates EPDs based on pedigree information and combines TraitTrac (genetic condition and trait) outcomes, and allows you to select a single breeding to a dam or several sires to a dam.
Another way to complete planned mating is through the Bulk Planned Mating tool. You may compare a list of dams to a list of sires by either entering the dam registration numbers or selecting a previously made group of animals, and then listing sire registration numbers.
TraitTrac information is evaluated based on the sire and dam’s TraitTrac status and is another asset to determine the likelihood of traits/conditions in the progeny based on information tracked through TraitTrac.
Active Herd (Found under the Herd Mgmt tab)
Active Herd allows you to create and maintain informal records for your animals on Herdbook. You create new animals or import existing (reported or registered) animals to your custom animal groups. Various data can be recorded including calf data, breeding records, pregnancy checks, treatment records, weaning, and yearling records.
Data and animals reported in Active Herd are not official ASA records; however, you may select animals to report using the traditional animal data job system. In a nutshell, Active Herd is a great scratchpad for your herd data before officially reporting it to the Association.
Keep in mind, each of these tools is FREE with membership. They were created to provide the ASA membership a leg-up while navigating tough decisions. In addition to these three tools, ASA offers an unmatched data reports system backed by the world’s largest multi-breed genetic evaluation.
