Animal Registration Requirements

Calf Birth Dam

ASA Registration Number: The ASA registration number of the birth dam, for natural calves, is required. If the calf is an embryo this would be the recipient dam’s registration number.

If you are reporting a calf to a commercial dam for the first time, enter her tattoo, birth date, and breed codes. The system will generate a number for her to be used when reporting all subsequent calves.

Foundation Dams: If the dam is registered with another breed association, send us a copy of the registration certificate to register her as a foundation dam for $5.00.

Donor Dam

ASA Registration Number: If the calf was an embryo, the ASA registration number of the genetic dam is required.

DNA Testing: All donor dams must have the 100K DNA testing, and genetic defects if applicable, completed to approve her as a donor. Calf registrations will be held until testing is complete and the donor is approved.

If registering a purchased embryo, the calf must be parent verified before the registration can be completed. Please contact our DNA team for more information (dna@simmgene.com).

Foundation Dams: If the dam is registered with another breed association, send a copy of the registration certificate to register her as a foundation dam for $5.00. The same DNA testing requirements apply to foundation dams before being approved as a donor. If the 100K testing (or its equivalent) has been completed at the primary association, the owner of the dam may be able to request that the results be forwarded to ASA. Please contact our DNA team for more information (dna@simmgene.com).

Sire

ASA Registration Number: The ASA registration number of the sire for each calf is required. Since many animals share common tattoos or names, we must have the registration number to identify and ensure we have the correct sire linked.

DNA Testing: All AI sires must have the 100K DNA testing, and genetic defects if applicable, completed to be approved as an AI sire before any calves can be registered out of them. If you purchased the semen for a sire not yet approved in the ASA system, contact the company you purchased the semen from and they may be able to help get him approved.

Natural service sires need to be tested for genetic defects, if applicable. Please contact our DNA team for more information (dna@simmgene.com).

Foundation Sires: If the sire is registered with another breed association, send a copy of the registration certificate to register him as a foundation sire for $25.00. The same DNA testing requirements apply to foundation sires before being approved as an AI sire. If the 100K testing (or its equivalent) has been completed at the primary association, the owner of the sire may be able to request that the results be forwarded to ASA. Please contact our DNA team for more information (dna@simmgene.com).

Calf Data

For a list of all codes please see the Standard Codes form.

Calf's tattoo/brand: A unique, permanent identification of up to 9 characters put on each animal by its owner. No two animals in a herd can share the same brand or tattoo. A letter designating the year the calf was born must be included in the tattoo or brand. The only letters not used by ASA are I, O, Q, and V. Click here for more information on ASA Year-Letter Identification System.

Tattoo Location: The location of the tattoo or brand on the animal.

Calf Sex: The sex of the animal. If a male is castrated at birth, use “S” (steer) for birth sex. If it is castrated at weaning or later, use “B” (bull) at birth and “S” (steer) at yearling.

Birth Date: Date of birth of animal.

Multiple Birth Code (MBC): Birth type of calf, such as a single, twin, or ET calf.

AI: Indicates if calf was the result of artificial insemination or natural service.

Horned/Polled/Scurred: Indicate status of calf.

Color: Predominant color of calf.

  • Name - Name of calf up to 30 characters and spaces. Refrain from using punctuation and symbols in the name.
