ASA and Neogen to Offer Free DNA Testing at AJSA National Classic

The American Simmental Association has partnered with Neogen to offer free GGP-100K testing on any animal entered and exhibited in the 2024 American Junior Simmental Association (AJSA) National Classic. This test, which typically costs $50, includes a full genomic panel and parentage.

Representatives from Neogen will be on site during the National Classic to host the Neogen DNA Clinic, scheduled for 2:30 PM, July 11. The clinic will be a great opportunity for junior members to learn about the benefits of DNA testing and how to appropriately take DNA samples. Following the clinic, those wishing to take advantage of this great offer can bring their animal(s) to the collection station to have a DNA sample taken by a Neogen or ASA team member. The collection station will be open from 3:30–5:00 PM on July 11 and from 3:00–5:00 PM on July 12.

Genomic testing is an extremely valuable tool for advancing genetic progress. Having an animal’s genomic data on file accelerates the ability to predict their performance; for example, the GGP-100K test is the equivalent of having over 25 calving ease and weaning weight records on file. This data not only improves the ability to predict an individual animal’s performance, but also any relatives also on file within the International Genetic Solutions database. The GGP-100K test also meets ASA’s requirements to qualify animals to be a donor dam or AI sire. Samples will remain on file, allowing for future trait or genetic condition testing if desired. Results will be uploaded to Herdbook in approximately four to five weeks, and shared to the email on file under the owner’s account.
